The motorcycle club Nomadas Lanzarote are in mourning after their oldest biker and chairman was killed in a traffic accident on Sunday morning.

79 year old Antonio Álvarez Acosta, better known as Chicho was travelling with his 80 year old wife, Purificación García who remains in a serious condition in hospital after the collision with a car. The incident happened at 10:30 outside the Sociedad Democracia by Playa del Reducto in the capital. Details of the collision are not clear, local police are investigating the cause of the accident. The couple were thrown from their Honda Shadow 750 during the impact, Chicho’s injuries were so severe that the emergency services could do nothing to save him, his wife has a serious head injury and is being treated in the Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa.
The loss of Antonio has been felt across the island, there is little comfort in the knowledge that this motorcyclist died doing something he loved. The couple came to Lanzarote when the San Antonio hotel opened in Puerto del Carmen, where he worked until retirement along with his wife who was a housekeeper for years.
Antonio’s funeral was held at the church in Tías on Monday. Nomadas Lanzarote held a memorial and concentration yesterday afternoon.
