For those readers not familiar with Ironman triathlon, this is an endurance race on the 18th May 2013, starting at 07:00 with a 3.8km swim to warm up on Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, followed by a bike course of 180km around the island, then it’s just a case of completing a marathon of 42.2km along the promenade in Puerto del Carmen.
It’s a fabulous event, the atmosphere in the resort of Puerto del Carmen is incredible, the tension gradually builds through the week as competitors arrive to acclimatise and check out the course prior to the race. For some, it’s their first time to the island, they’ve not experienced the heat, strong wind or witnessed our volcanic landscape before.
If you’d like to get involved, registration for volunteers has opened for help with aid stations situated on the bike route and marathon course. Registration is online through www.lanzarotedeportes.com, volunteers must be aged a minimum of 16 years, there are 2 shifts offered through the Cabildo, the first is from 11:30 – 16:30 and other 15:30 – 20:00. Just complete your details and attach a copy of your passport to register. Having helped on previous years, we can tell you assisting at the island’s most important sporting event is very rewarding, you can really make a difference for the participants who need encouragement as well as food and drink.
