Our latest quest for a fresh fish and white wine lunch in Lanzarote took us to Restaurante Salmarina on the promenade in Playa Honda by Playa Guasimeta.
The weather was overcast, warm and windy so we took shelter in the courtyard terrace at the side of the restaurant. The waiters were very friendly, taking time to explain some of the dishes on the menu, we decided on some dishes for sharing rather than fresh grilled fish of the day.
First to arrive was a decent sized portion of puntillas, which are baby squids deep fried and one of my favourites. Served simply with a garnish and slice of lemon, they were cooked to perfection being light and crispy without grease.
I hadn’t tried pimientos del piquillo rellenos de cherne before, however it will be a dish I’m looking out for in the future. The recipe is to take bright red piquillo peppers and stuff them with fish, in this instance it was cherne, and typically it’s bacalao (cod). The peppers are then thinly coated and deep fried. We’d only asked for two, however the waiter suggested we order four as they were small. Two would have been sufficient, as we were left feeling quite full and a dish left to go.
We had ordered buñuelos de cherne as our third dish, all of the food had been well presented, this one arrived in a deep glass dish with papas arrugadas, those wrinkly little Canarian potatoes cut in half, with the fish pieces placed on top and all drizzled in red and green mojo sauce. The fish donuts were amazing, the coating was dry and similar to a popcorn batter, the fish inside light and fluffy.
Lunch had more than exceeded our expectation, the Salmarina is a lovely restaurant in a great position. Pricewise, the three dishes we ordered cost €8-12 each, our white wine €2.52 a glass and coffees €1-2.
