It’s the end of July and time to get serious about the Lanzarote Marathon which takes place on the 8th December 2013.
The Lanzarote International Marathon attracts more than 800 athletes from 22 countries to the island and is one of the most established events (23rd edition)in the sporting calendar here. There’s always a great atmosphere on race day and the climate is generally perfect at that time of year for a distance sporting event, as it’s not too hot, we can expect a little bit of cloud cover and a light wind.
Last year, Stephen & Bella Bayliss, who are husband and wife, won the marathon with times of 2:43:23 and 3:00:54 respectively. They’re no strangers to Lanzarote and enjoy the warm weather training facilities available at the Sands Beach Resort through the winter months. The year before, in 2011 it was Marcos Diehl and Pilar Isidro on the podium for the Lanzarote marathon with times of 2:37:40 and 3:14:30.
It’s not all long distance though, runners have a choice of three races starting with 10km, then a half distance marathon of 21km or the full marathon of 42km. The course will remain the same as last year which stretched out along the coast from Costa Teguise through Arrecife to Puerto del Carmen with three turn points for the different distances.
The event is sponsored and organised by Sands Beach Resort in Costa Teguise, the hotel have prepared a choice of special offers to entice you to stay onsite for the race including packages for 1-4 and 5-7 nights accommodation.
Book early to take advantage of the discounted entry fees, the prices are €30 Marathon, €20 Half Marathon & €10 for the 10km until the 30th September. From the 1st October to 30th November these increase to €40, €30 & €15 respectively. Last minute entries are available from the 1st to 8th December at a premium price of €50, €40 & €20.
