Haría Adopt César Manrique

The Ayuntamiento of Haría will officially adopt César Manrique as their son in a special ceremony on the 16th August.

The extraordinary plenary session on Friday at 13:30 will be held in the Sala El Aljibe, which is the underground exhibition room in the Plaza de la Constitución in the centre of Haría. This event has an open invitation to the public, if you would like to attend. Afterwards at 14:15 there will be an unveiling of the new street plaque César Manrique, Calle Malpaso near his house was renamed after the artist, following his death.

This occasion marks the beginning of a new era for Haría with the imminent opening of Manrique’s house by the Fundación César Manrique and the launch of the Ruta Manriqueña. The initiative will bring a new influx of visitors to the area, to witness the personal life of the artist and creator of iconic places such as the Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río.

César Manrique died on the 25th September 1992 in a car crash during his normal commute from work at the Fundación in Tahíche to his home in Haría. The artist was laid to rest in the municipal cemetery of Haría.

Haría has been a hive of activity over the past couple of weeks in preparation, houses around the village have been tidied up and painted, this is a proud and historical moment for the rural town.

Residents in the municipality of Haría are invited to visit the Casa Museo César Manrique free of charge between the 20th August and 20th October. Opening hours are 10:30 to 16:30 everyday (Last entry 15:50). Due to the fragility of the space, visitors to the museum will be given guided tours, leaving every 20 minutes. This coming Sunday, the 18th August the house is open exclusively for Harianos, you must prove your residency in the municipality with D.N.I. for free entry.
