The Cochino Cojo has been on our list of places to try since they won the Ruta de Tapas competition held last Christmas in Costa Teguise.
We finally had the opportunity to test out their tapas during a lunchtime recently and we weren’t disappointed. The Cochino Cojo tapas bar restaurant is situated between C.C. Las Maretas and Pueblo Marinero on Avenida Islas Canarias. The shaded and sheltered terrace has a selection of rustic themed tables and the menu offers a varied choice of montaditos, pinchos & tapas dishes.
We ordered a bottle of Sidra Natural Riestra to share whilst we reviewed the food options. The menu was a little difficult to read, it’s etched into wood! Fortunately there were chalk boards with easier to read descriptions.
We ordered montaditos of morcilla, papas bravas and croquetas caseras. The cider from Asturias was an excellent choice, it’s flat, cloudy and dry, upon further research the cider has been produced by the Riestra family in Gijón for over one hundred years, priced at €4.95 a bottle it was good value too.
Our montaditos arrived first, this is a tapa served on a slice of crusty bread, our choice was black pudding which was served on a grilled slice of rulo de cabra (goats cheese) with caramelised onions – a delicious combination. The homemade croquettes were amazing, we were in agreement that they were simply the best we’ve ever eaten in Spain. Papas bravas is diced potato fried and served with a spicy mayonnaise style sauce drizzled over the top, these were perfectly cooked.
The presentation and quality of the food at Cochino Cojo is obviously important to the chef, we viewed other dishes being served and eaten with gusto and agreed we’ll definitely be back in the near future. As you might expect from the name, the restaurant has a special selection of fresh pork meat dishes including cerdo ibérico.
Price wise the montaditos were €1.60 each, papas bravas €3.90 and croquetas €5.90.
The restaurant is closed on Mondays and otherwise open from midday to 23:00. The Cochino Cojo is part of this year’s Ruta de Tapas which is still available until the 6th January 2014.
