100 Million Investment in Puerto del Carmen

The resort of Puerto del Carmen has been in the press this week for three different announcements regarding investment and improvements for Lanzarote’s original holiday destination.

Last Friday Pancho Hernández, the Mayor of Tías held a meeting with local professionals from the tourism sector at the Hotel Beatriz Playa in Puerto del Carmen. During the presentation the Mayor and Nerea Santana, the Tourism Councillor for Tías confirmed details of 20 investments outlined for the resort totalling an investment of 100 million euros to be completed before 2015.

These new projects are part of the second phase of the Plan de Modernización para la Mejora y Competitividad de Puerto del Carmen, 17 of them are from the private sector and account for 90 million euros, the other 3 are funded by resources from the local council, island council and Canary Islands Government as part of the Plan de Mejora de los Espacios Públicos de Canarias, to improve public space in the Canaries.

The event was attended by approximately 100 entrepreneurs, professionals from the investment companies and associations including ASOLAN, AETUR, Cámara de Comercio & Felapyme. The private investments will be completed between 2013 – 2015 and include Hotels San Antonio, Don Paco Castilla & Floresta, Balcón del Mar, theme park Rancho Texas, Centro Comercial Barracuda, Centro Comercial Costa Mar, Centro Comercial Las Rocas, and Centro Deportivo Fariones.

Plans for a new scuba diving area were announced for a space situated between Playa Chica and the Old Harbour, which is currently rough ground that is used for car parking. The project is to create a new 190m2 dive centre including toilets, changing rooms and showers on the promenade as well as an 10m2 information kiosk, a pontoon style pier of 12m x 2m for diving boats and ramp for divers to access the water. These new facilities already have local planning approval and are pending final authorisation from the Demarcación de Costas de Canarias. Tías Mayor, Pancho confirmed that they are working to adapt the tourist municipality of Tías to meet the new demands of their visitors. The resort of Puerto del Carmen has a beautiful coastline to practise the popular sport of scuba diving, which many visitors want to experience during their holiday. The council want this new diving station in Puerto del Carmen and are working on the project becoming a reality this year.

The first recharging point for electric vehicles in a Canary Islands tourist resort was officially opened in Puerto del Carmen on Tuesday. Pancho Hernández, the Mayor of Tías is pictured plugging in the first electric car. The recharging point is situated on the main Avenida de Las Playas by Rocas Blancas who are supplying the electric for this facility.

Experts consider Lanzarote as the ideal place to establish electric mobility due to the size and terrain of the island. According to car hire industry sources, a tourist rarely would rarely exceed driving more than 120 km in one day which is the battery capacity of an mid range electric vehicle.
