It was a bit of a shock to see the palms in front of the Deiland Shopping Centre being cut down recently. The Cabildo have since published a report that these palms were diseased, which was the reason for their removal.
The thirteen palms located on the strip of land between the car park at Deiland and the LZ-2 main road, were of the Phoenix Canariensis variety which is a protected species here. The palms upon inspection were found to be severely infected with Diocalandra frumenti (Fabricius), given the proximity of people and cars travelling through this area, the best cause of action was to remove them, before one could fall and cause an accident.
The environmental department authorised the removal of the Canarian Palms, primarily due to the serious danger of collapse through disease and secondly to reduce the risk of spreading the disease further in the area.
