The beaches of Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote were stripped of their sunbeds and umbrellas over the Easter weekend.
Secapla S.L. hold the contract to supply the sunbeds and umbrellas for hire on Playa Grande, Los Pocillos and Matagorda until 2017. The company advised the local council that services would be withdrawn on the 1st April 2013, but actually withdrew services early over the Easter bank holiday weekend for maximum impact. As Secapla also provide the lifeguard and cleaning services on their beaches, Tías council have confirmed that emergency measures have been taken to provide lifeguards from today, so that they can remain open for swimmers.
The beach services were withdrawn following a recent decision ruled in the Supreme Court that Secapla were bound to pay a substantial fee to the council relating to the contract to supply the sunbeds and beach services on the municipal beaches. An extraordinary plenary session will be held at the council on Tuesday 2nd April to discuss the urgent measures required following the withdrawal of services.
A statement was issued on Saturday 30th March from Tías Mayor, José Francisco Hernández informing press and business professionals in Puerto del Carmen of the situation and apologising for any inconvenience due to the unpredictable action to default on this contract over the busy Easter weekend.
