Lanzarote’s emergency services were required at both ends of the island over the weekend, when a car left the road at the Mirador del Río and two fisherman were washed off the rocks by the lighthouse in Playa Blanca.
A 54 year old fisherman died on Saturday and another 40 year old suffered hypothermia after being caught by a wave in an area known as Zoco de Inés, near the lighthouse at Pechiguera in Playa Blanca. The alarm was raised by a third fisherman who had managed to cling to the rocks when the wave hit around 7 o’clock in the morning. A dive boat in the area located one of the fishermen about a mile from the lighthouse. The man was transferred to the medical centre in Playa Blanca after showing signs of hypothermia and was later taken to the main Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife. Sadly the other fisherman was found floating face down by a Gobierno de Canarias boat around 08:30. Emergency services performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than an hour without success before his death was confirmed.
Firemen were required to attend a car accident on Sunday morning at 9:41 when an Opel Corsa left the road in Ye near the Mirador del Rio in the north of Lanzarote. The 23 year old male driver and sole occupant of the car was cut free of the wreckage and evacuated to hospital by helicopter with abdominal injuries.
