Teguise council have announced new regulations for the beaches situated within their municipality, which includes the resort of Costa Teguise and the surfer’s paradise of Famara.
Fishermen and dog owners in particular should be aware of these changes, which could result in a fine being issued if not adhered to.
The regulations define the use of the beach, the number of sunbeds and location allowed in the resort of Costa Teguise, maritime corridors to launch nautical equipment and allocated areas to practise water sports. Oswaldo Betancort, the Mayor of Teguise said that the changes in relation to the use of Playa de Famara has been agreed by the local surf and kite schools to reach an agreement that benefits all parties.
The beaches governed by the new rules are: Playa de las Cucharas; Playa Bastián; Playa del Ancla; Playa del Jablillo; Playa de Los Charcos; & Playa de Famara. Two corridors have been created on Playa de Las Cucharas and Playa de Los Charcos for boats and sports enthusiasts to access the water.Now the whole beach of Famara is open to swimmers, including zones that are available for surfing, kite surfing and shore fishing, although this is at the swimmers own risk and responsibility. Fishing is now allowed in the area known as El Rincón from 18:00 to 08:00, this schedule does not affect swimmers.
Fines range from €750 for a mild breach, €1500 for a serious offence and as high as €3000 for a very serious offence. These charges relate to misdemeanours which include taking dogs on the beach, BBQ’s or invading the swimming area. More serious misconducts are listed as swimming whilst the red flag is flying or fishing outside hours / designated zone. Serious offences relate to pollution that can impact the marine and wildlife and shoreline.
