In the future residents will no longer be required to produce copies of their Certificado de Empadronamiento para Viajar to receive the residents discount available in the Canary and Balaeric Islands, for travel within Spain.
Instead the travel agencies, ferry companies and airlines must prove residency of passengers online via the SARA telematics system. You will still need to register with your local council as a resident and make sure that your padron is kept up to date, to be able to receive the 50% discount, plus be able to prove your identity with a valid DNI and passport at check in.
The change was brought about by the government who deemed the issuing of these certificates as an unnecessary procedure.
No date has been given as to when the change will take effect, the amendment was approved by the cabinet on Friday.
