It’s official, January was the coolest in the last 5 years and the wettest of the last 2 for the Canary Islands, according to the met office.
The first week of the month was lovely, with warm sunny days in fact Tafira in Gran Canaria registered 26.8 degrees, which is the maximum temperature recorded for the past 20 years. January’s average temperature (including night & day) was 14.5 degrees for the Archipelago, which was described as normal for the time of year, although the coolest since 2009.
Lanzarote was spared a lot of the rain that fell across the other Canary Islands, we didn’t have long wet days, more sudden showers followed by bouts of sunshine. Aemet confirmed that the mean rainfall for the seven islands was 55 litres per m2 which is not much more that the dry Januarys of 2013 & 2013 and similar to those experienced in 2009 & 2010. We did experience strong winds on several occasions, which resulted in coastal warnings and waves reaching up to 5 metres in Lanzarote, causing damage to the harbours in La Santa and Arrieta.
