Yaiza council have announced a 15 day window of opportunity for private companies to submit a tender, to provide sunbeds on Playa Mujeres at Papagayo in Playa Blanca.
The contract is to install and operate sunbeds, umbrellas, chairs, nautical equipment and a kiosk on the first beach at Papagayo situated on the outskirts of Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote. The contract is for temporary occupation of the area from 2013 to 2016 and grants use of 500m2 for sunbed and umbrella rental, 402m2 for nautical pleasure crafts and 20m2 for a kiosk.
The announcement has not been popular with everyone, many feel that these beaches should not be commercialised, as they are within the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches, a protected zone of Lanzarote. The beauty of Papagayo is that these beaches have largely been alone left to enjoy in their natural state with the exception of the campsite at Puerto Muelas and restaurants on Playa Papagayo.
The successful tender will be expected to construct a kiosk with electricity and toilets, the designated beach space will hold 250 sunbeds and umbrellas. Part of the contract is to provide a tourist information and lifeguard service on the beach.
What do you think? Would you like to see a commercial operation on this beach or would it spoil it for you?
