Camel Rides in Timanfaya

$

There are a few different ways to experience the beautiful national park of Timanfaya in Lanzarote, the one that we’ll remember for a long time is by camel.

timanfaya camelsCamels in Lanzarote

The Echadero de los Camellos in Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is easy to find, it’s on the main road from Yaiza LZ-67 as you approach the visitor attraction. Simply turn into the large car park when you arrive where you can see the camels lined up and waiting patiently for their next passengers.

There’s no need to book, you can simply turn up at any time between 09:00 and 16:00 for a camel ride. It costs €12 per camel, so great value at only €6 each for the camel tour.

It’s not obvious if you need to visit the gift shop by the toilets in the car park to buy tickets in advance of your camel ride. You don’t, it’s simply a case of paying one of the men with the camels who will issue you a ticket in receipt.

We arrived in time for the last tour of the day, before we knew it we were allocated our camel and it was time to go! Both passengers sit simultaneously on the seats either side of the camel and the guide fastens your seatbelt. Any difference in weight is adjusted with sacks tied on, so that an adult can ride with a child and the weight is fairly evenly distributed for the camel.

Camel Ride TimanfayaCamel Train TimanfayaOur camel

We didn’t feel scared when the camel lurched to it’s knees and stood up, it was fun! We were positioned at the end of a camel train and we were off, walking the length of the car park before climbing the south side of the volcán de Timanfaya. A camel's gait is weird, to me it felt like a combination of being on horseback, whilst at sea. The walking pace of a camel is very serene, they just amble along their well worn track, occasionally grunting. We didn’t know what to make of these soft moans and groans from the camels, were they complaining about us or just communicating? Either way, we loved the way these delightful belly rumbles were emitted freely during our trek.

The camel ride takes around 20 minutes, you might think that’s not very long but for our first time, it was long enough!

We can highly recommend going for a camel ride in Lanzarote, we laughed so much and have created a memory that will last a life time.

Swissport workers based in Madrid and Lanzarote airports have failed to reach an agreement, so the partial strikes are planned to continue.

Swissport Strike

This week Arrecife Airport in Lanzarote could be affected by partial strikes on the 9th & 11th of July from 08:00 – 11:00 and 15:00 – 19:00, this could increase from 08:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 23:59 until the end of July if an agreement cannot be reached.

The indefinite strike has been called to protest against the inflexible attitude of the company in the negotiation of agreements for casual workers.

LZ-2 Resurfacing

A section of the main road to Playa Blanca on the LZ-2 will be closed from Wednesday to Friday this week for resurfacing.

Roadworks_LZ-2

The work is part of the Plan de Mejoras de las Carreteras de la isla to improve the highways of the island and affects the 1.6 km stretch between La Hoya and Yaiza, near the Salinas de Janubio. The road will be closed to traffic from the 10th to 12th July for resurfacing and new road markings. A diversion using the old road LZ-701 will be in place during this time.

The councillor for Public Works at the Cabildo, José Antonio Gutiérez explained that the work is part of the continuous plan costing around seven million euros to improve the island’s road network. This particular project between Yaiza and La Hoya has a budget of 187,713 euros.

The Department of Public Works apologises for any inconvenience and asks users to respect the temporary signs and diversions in place.

Exhibition: 13+37 Domingo Haria

$

The retrospective exhibition “13+37” from Domingo Haría is due to open tomorrow at 8pm on Thursday 11th July 2013.

Domingo Haria

Domingo is a multidisciplinary artist from the north of Lanzarote, he started creating at the age of 13, so from the title it's not hard to figure out how long he's been doing it (and what age is he now!) . The collection shown on this occasion includes paintings, ceramics, prints and 'installations', which I can only guess is some sort of sculptures or fixtures. A good excuse to check it out and find out.

The exhibition is on display in the Sala El Aljibe in the centre of Haría, entrance to the exhibition is free and it will be shown there until the 3rd of August.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10 to 1 and from 5 to 7 and on Saturdays from 10 to 2.

Still No Sun Beds

Sadly things have not gone according to plan with the return of the sun beds in Puerto del Carmen, the unfortunate saga continues.

Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen

You may recall that today, the 10th July was the date from which the beds could be restored to the beaches in the holiday resort. It appears that the first company who agreed to the contract, have resigned, causing a further delay and losing their deposit in the process.

A second company have been offered and accepted the contract, now we wait up to 15 days to see if they will sign the necessary paperwork and proceed with supplying and maintaining the beach services in Puerto del Carmen.

The new company could be in operation on the five main beaches by late July, however if they don’t accept the contract, it continues to pass down the the list of companies who submitted tenders.

Irish Tourists Spend The Most

$
0
0

Looking back at the tourism statistics for 2012, it was tourists visiting from Ireland who spent the most money during their holidays in the Canary Islands.

Euro coins

Irish visitors spent just over €54 per day which is significantly more that the average of €37 spent by other nationalities. German tourists on the other hand spent the least during their holidays, around €28 per day.  This information is according to the Instituto Canario de Estadística (Istac) who record the statistics for the islands.

It’s not that the Germans don’t spend money on their holidays here, they do, it’s just that they are more likely to spend it reserving a higher level of accommodation on an all inclusive basis. Whereas typically Irish spend less on their actual reservation, allowing themselves more to spend at the local supermarkets, bars and restaurants during their holiday.

The German market is a much bigger one for the Canary Islands than the Irish, 2,642,638 tourists came from Germany in 2012 as opposed to 378,260 Irish across the 7 islands (data from Observatorio Turístico Canario).

June Tourist Figures

Lanzarote’s passenger arrival figures from Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) show an increase of 4.7% for June compared to 2012. This equates to 430,361 people flying into Arrecife airport during June and a total of 2,452,822 from January to June 2013. Year on year we have lost 1.5% of passengers to date compared to 2012, which isn’t too bad considering the other main islands have dropped 9.8% Tenerife North, 9.7% Fuerteventura & 5.7% Gran Canaria. Only Tenerife South is better at a small drop of 0.5% 2013 v 2012.

Summer 2013

The foreign market is continuing to perform well, however visitors from the peninsula are significantly lacking, making connections from the islands to the mainland of Spain harder to find. Hoteliers are also reporting an increase in availability requests from tour operators, just in case the need should arise to divert holidaymakers bound for Egypt elsewhere.

You can find a daily weather forecast for Lanzarote during the weekdays on our Facebook page LanzaroteInformation.

Canary Islands From Space

This image from NASA shows the weather system we’ve had during the month of June, the west coast has been enveloped in cloud, the east coast mainly clear and sunny. This effect is caused by the trade winds, we get a fantastic build up of cloud along the Risco de Famara that drifts down into the valley like dry ice in a disco. In general, the mornings have been fairly cloudy, burning off by late morning, fairly strong winds and sunshine for June this year.
