The blue flag awarded to Playa Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise was officially hoisted on Thursday 11th July 2013.

Bandera Azul Playa Las Cucharas

Mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort is pictured raising the flag, this is the first time in five years that the beach has met the strict quality, safety and environmental standards set to be awarded the blue flag. This distinction endorses the work that has been completed so far by the council, their aim is to have two more flags flying on the beaches of Playa del Jablillo and Playa Bastian in the near future.

Work has also commenced to replenish sand on the beaches of Jablillo, Los Charcos and El Ancla in the resort. Around 2,000 m3 / 1,800 tonnes of sand will be transported from Lanarote’s desert (El Jable) near Muñique to be distributed to these three beaches. The project is expected to be completed this month.

Demolition Diversion Playa Honda

Traffic travelling from the industrial zone in Playa Honda in the direction of San Bartolomé will be temporarily diverted tomorrow, Wednesday 17th July.

plano definitivo cambio tráfico por derribo en zona industrial 17072013 jpg

This diversion is in place from 07:00 until the work is completed. It affects vehicles that would normally pass along Calle La Hoya down the side of the Ambar furniture shop and around the back of Ropers. Instead traffic will be diverted via Calle Hoya Grande, as indicated in the plan above, to re-join the road at the junction with the new ITV station.

The Department of Urban and Industrial Zone from the Ayuntamiento of San Bartolomé apologise for any inconvenience that the temporary diversion might cause and ask drivers to use extreme caution and observe the safety measures in place, by following the signs and indications.

The commercial zone of Terminal 1 at Lanzarote Airport is due to have a two million euro overhaul.

Lanzarote Airport

Construction on the new shopping area begins next week according to AENA, which also includes remodelling of the duty free shop and restaurants. The project is expected to take 9 months and be completed by Spring 2014.

Airport Director Manuel Vinegre explained that the strategy is to improve the airport to enable passengers to have the best quality experience whilst they pass through the facility at Guacimeta, one worthy for the end of their stay in Lanzarote.

The retail space will be reorganised and new brands introduced to give travellers a broader experience. The key objective is to increase revenue from 7.5 million euros spent during 2012 to 13.5 million by 2017.

Both sides of the airport will be renovated including the shops in the check in area as well as airside. The duty free shop will increase form 654 m2 to 1050 m2 and the number of shops will remain at 11 but with an increase in floor space from 1040 m2 to 1135 m2 in a boulevard style.

Puerto del Carmen Weekly Market

An official announcement was made in the Boletín last Friday by the Ayuntamiento of Tías, informing market traders to apply for stalls available in a new weekly market.

Old Harbour Puerto del CarmenPlaza del Varadero

The market will be held every Friday and situated on the Plaza Varadero, in the old harbour of Puerto del Carmen.

A points system has been designed for the allocation of the 66 stalls, so that preference is given to those who are currently unemployed, have family responsibilities and are older. Forty points will be awarded for the most economical offers received, 10 points for older artisans, 25 points for those in social situations and 25 points for those in employment difficulties. The Department of Commerce emphasized that this pioneering new procedure in Lanzarote adheres to the legal regulations, whilst allowing for competition and transparency to those people and companies who would like a position in the new market.

Interested parties have 20 working days following the date of publication which was the 12th July to submit their bids for market stalls. The market specification is that of the 66 stalls available, 20 should be allocated to artisans. Apart from artisans, the categories include the sale of products including agricultural, sea salt, jewellery, shoes, bags, accessories, textiles, cosmetics, perfume and food services.

The market should be up and running within a matter of weeks, once the administration process has been concluded.

Main road into Costa Teguise closed for nine months

$

According to an article published in La Provincia today, the junction to access Costa Teguise from the Arrecife ring road will be closed until March 2014.

Diverted Traffic

Drivers will have to access Costa Teguise via the old single road through Las Caletas for the next nine months, whilst work progresses on the duplication of the Circunvalación. The news was released by José Antonio Gutiérrez, the Cabildo’s Minister for Public Works following a meeting with the Director of Road Infrastructure for the Canary Islands and Juan Ventura, the Mayor of Arrecife.

The resort’s dual carriageway connection through to the capital won’t be closed for as long, this section should take around six months to complete.

Exhibition: Callejones de Arrecife by Luis Carballo

There is a new paintings exhibition by Luis Carballo Calero in the Ermita de San Antonio in Tías.

poster

It's called "Callejones de Arrecife", "callejón" being the Spanish for alleyway. I decided to check it out, having missed last week's inauguration.

The artist is originally from Tenerife and is self-taught. His specialty is portraits, a sample of which are also shown alongside some nudes, some religious scenes, landscapes, still lifes and even some scenes from his own island, and of course, the scenes from our capital that give the name to the exhibition. I don't know Arrecife too well, but I even recognize a couple of spots.

His technique is quite unique, as he doesn't use brushes but palette knifes to paint, giving his works a very impressionist look. One of my favourites is a series of fours small paintings with only a bench and four trees during the four seasons – simple, yet very poetic!

He is a pleasant chap to talk to (the exhibition is manned by the artist himself!) and his work varied enough that surely you are bound to find something that appeals to you. Pop in a have a look, it's a nice way to step away from the heat that we are having these days.

The exhibition will be shown until the 3rd of August from Monday to Friday from 5pm to 8pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 2pm.

You can see the photos of the opening here Callejones de Arrecife Inauguration and have a glimpse of his paintings - some of them in this exhibition!- on the artists Facebook page Luis Carballo Calero.

Freddy "El Gato" - Playa Blanca

We met Winfried Scholz last week, who is perhaps better known as Freddy “El Gato.”

Cats

He’s an interesting character, who has been living on the island since 1994, when he arrived and booked into an apartment in Puerto del Carmen. Within a few days he realized that area wasn’t for him and he moved into a cave in Papagayo!

Freddie is a lawyer, who speaks several languages and who is in the process of writing a book about the island he cares passionately about, but he’s best known as the “Cat guy.”

His mission to help the feral cats that live in Playa Blanca, and to do that he has set up food stations at various parts of the resort where the cats can come for water, food and shelter from the sun. He also does his best to control the population with a program of castration and neutering. His work is largely self funded, supplemented with the odd donation and the sale of “Cat friend” necklaces. Occasionally locals and tourists leave bags of cat food at the stations, and these are gratefully accepted – cat food is expensive on the island!

He’s certainly controversial, talking openly about disagreements with various people in the area, one of which lead to him suffering a knife attack, and he’s not shy about laying the blame for some of the island’s problems firmly at the door of the politicians.

This controversial side is balanced by the work he does for the cats, and the fact that he thinks nothing of choosing a piece of open land, and cleaning and tidying it for several hours, to the benefit of everyone.

He’s planning to open a café in Playa Blanca soon, and some of the profits from that will go towards paying for the work he does with the cats. We’ll keep you posted on that.

Here’s a video he made showing his cat feeding stations:

I visited the Cueva de los Verdes for the first time shortly after I moved to Lanzarote. I thought the place was magic.

Concerts in the cave 2013

To my surprise we saw that they were holding a concert the next day and we were so intrigued about what it would be like that we went back the following night to attend the performance. Now, that was magic!

Here is the programme of this year's concerts:

Conciertos de la Cueva Programme 2013

Saturday, 27th of July

Quintet in A Major Op. 81 by Dvorak,

Quintet in E Major Op. 44 by Schumann,

Thursday, 15th of August

Fantasy by Britten

Saturday, 21st of September

Sueños (dreams), a musical show created by Daniel Negrín that combines aromatherapy with world music and nature sounds.

Saturday, 12th of October

Quartet by Fauré

Quartet Op. 87 by Dvorak

Saturday, 16th of November

Quintet in A Minor Op. 84 by Elgar

Quintet Op. 115 by Fauré

Tickets costs €20.00 each and can be purchased at all CACT ticket offices. There is no discount for residents but the organisers are considering to offer a season ticket and the possibility to reserve tickets online. We'll keep you posted as soon as we are informed of any progress on that front.

All concerts are start 20:00.

Please do allow at least 20 minutes to arrive on site, park and descent to the Auditorio. Those who have already been to the cave will know that, although perfectly doable, the descent is a bit tricky. I would also advise to wear "sensible" shoes for the same reason. Finally for those more sensitive in terms of temperature, bring something heavier to wrap yourself with as it can feel a bit chilly. Or is it the music giving you the goose bumps? Find out for yourself!

Lanzarote Restaurant Review, Barstro

When we heard that Viktor and Paul had left Casa Roja in Puerto del Carmen to open their own restaurant, we were there! Barstro is a bistro with a twist and situated in Oasis de Nazaret, Lanzarote.

Barstro SignageBarstro dining

The residents of Nazaret must be delighted with the opening of Barstro, apart from LagOmar and the sociedad if you want to eat out, it was previously a trip to La Villa de Teguise or further afield. This purpose built restaurant is wonderfully equipped, there’s a central dining room which is ideal for groups and special occasions plus an enclosed terrace area with views out across the countryside.

Paul has an amazing kitchen, we can’t wait to see what he’s going to create in there with a promise to change the menu every 2 weeks. We were given a full tour of the premises and they are impressive, the kitchen is open to the restaurant so you can see Chef at work.

Puff pastry with mushrooms & musselsWarm pork scratchings

Viktor is the Maître d’ of Barstro so you can be assured of fantastic hospitality with just the right balance of personal attention and great service. We ordered a glass of Bermejo vino blanco seco, whilst the sun was setting and we browsed the menu. We were pleasantly surprised at the prices, the tapas menu ranges from €3.50 to just over €5.00, main meals €9.50 - €13.50 and desserts €4.00 - €6.50. Viktor explained that their price policy is aimed at the resident market.

We settled on our starters, I couldn’t resist the warm pork scratching served on a bed of garden leaf salad with apple dressing, whilst Miguel ordered one of the specials a savoury puff pastry served with mushrooms and mussels. I love pork scratching and wasn’t disappointed in my dish, the pork was deliciously crispy without the risk of breaking a tooth and worked well with the fresh salad drizzled in apple. I was envious of Miguel’s pastry though, so struck a deal where we shared half of each!  Yum, what can I say, this dish is superb, it was strongly flavoured of fish, the pastry was still crisp even with the sauce and the pumpkin seeds on the top added to the overall taste – definitely one to try if it’s still on the menu.

Herb crusted rib-eye with home cut chipsRed tuna with wasabi paste & black noodles

Our main courses were both ordered off the menu, Miguel didn’t hesitate selecting the rib-eye steak and home cut chips, whilst I opted for something different, red tuna with wasabi paste and served on a bed of black noodles.  The steak was incredibly tasty and very tender, Barstro aren’t mean with their portion of chips either, there was a good bowl full included which I just had to help Miguel out with. My fish was delicious, I adore wasabi but if you didn’t then the tuna can be served without, there was also an option to have the dish without the black noodles which I hadn’t tried before.

Poached pear with white chocolate & coconut soupRaspberry Brulée

Then it was time for my favourite part of the menu, desserts! We listened to the emphasis each was given as Viktor read out the options and just had to order the poached pear in white chocolate and coconut soup and the raspberry brulée. We weren’t wrong, these puddings are to die for! The chocolate and coconut soup has been engraved on our taste buds, wow, this was quite unlike anything we’ve tasted before, it’s fabulous you have to try it. The brulée was wonderful, crispy top, fluffy centre with a pop of sharp raspberry, definitely a dish with a twist.

Barstro is a fabulous addition to the restaurants available in Lanzarote, what’s more it’s fairly close to where we live so we’ll definitely be checking out the menu changes in the future. Paul and Viktor are a first class team, we’ve witnessed it before at Casa Roja but now they have the chance to shine in their own right. We highly recommend this restaurant, they’re open from 12:00 to 23:00 every day, feel free to pop in for coffee & cake, just a drink, tapas or evening meal, you’ll be made to feel very welcome.
